Program Overview

KVA PACK 2020 Youth Club Programs Overview

12U (2008) to 18U (2002) Girls and 13U (2007)-18U(2002) Boys

Each season KVA PACK Youth Committee will determine what age groups a High Performance Team Program will be offered at based on what is available for committed athletes and coaches at tryouts.  Older Age groups will get first priority on available HP Coaches.

Team Programs

  • Girls

    • 12U-18U

    • High Performance (HP) Programs will be potentially offered for 15U, 16U and potentially 17/18U Girls age groups.

    • Developmental (DV) Programs will be offered for 12U, 13U, 14U, 15U & 16U age groups.

    • The 14U age group will still be a tiered (“A” & “B”) teams.

    • 12U & 13U Girls will be a “balanced” division if more than 1 team is created

    • A 17/18U Developmental Program will be considered each year depending on the # of interested athletes to make a viable team and the availability of coaches.

    • HP vs DV programs are not the same as VolleyballBC’s ‘AA’ vs ‘A’ designation.  An HP team may still end up competing in a ‘A’ division under VolleyballBC’s rankings. This means a HP and DV team could be competing against each other in the same VolleyballBC Division.  For 16U+ age groups VolleyballBC will determine a teams ranking based on the ranking of athletes on the roster. All athletes are tracked and ranked by VBC starting with 15U Provincials.

  • Boys

    • 13U/14U

      • If numbers allow, we look at creating a 13U Boys team

    • 15U/16U

    • 17U/18U

KVA does reserve the right to mix some age groups if numbers require it to maintain viable teams.  This applies to both HP and DV Team Programs

**All teams require a Parent Team Manager, or there will be NO out of town overnight tournaments for that team!!!

  • Club Teams Program Overview

    • Athletes who wish to tryout in two age groups:

        • For athletes wanting to play up an age group or athletes wishing to play with the ‘age exemption rule’ (born in Sept-December of a previous year)

        • Get permission from the Youth Committee first (email youthadmin@kamvolleyball.ca)

        • Register and pay for both tryouts (Late Registration fee may apply)

        • Understand that if you are offered a position on the first team you tryout for and you decline it “hoping/waiting” for the second team position, you may have then lost that position.  We will not delay team selections based on an athlete “waiting” for a later tryout.

        • KVA may recommend an athlete to tryout for another age group if deemed appropriate (additional tryout fee will be waived if this is the case)

      • Funding Resources

    • Commitment fee: after being offered and accepting a position on  the team a commitment fee will be due to confirm the position.  Failure to pay by the deadline can result in the spot being offered to another athlete.

    • Coach fees are due 1 week prior to each tournament unless arranged with coach otherwise. Failure to pay coaches can result in not being able to play at the tournament.

    • Programs run from first week of January through Early-Mid May (depending on when Provincials and/or Nationals are scheduled in each age group)

    • Practices

      • HP: 3x week + 10 Week Strength Training with team (costs included)

      • DV: 2x week

    • Tournaments

      • HP: varies by age group

      • DV:varies by age group

    • Commitment Level

      • HP: Volleyball is expected to be the primary sport,  practices and tournaments are mandatory

      • DV: Volleyball is not expected to be primary sport but some tournaments (provincials) are mandatory and athletes are expected to attend at least 1 practice/week. **Absences can affect playing time though!!

    • All athletes are expected to attend the open tryouts.

      • Athletes will then be short listed to be invited to the HP Team Tryouts

      • Athletes who do not wish to be considered for an HP Team may indicate so

      • Once the HP team selections are finalized then the DV team selections will be finalized.

      • HP Teams positions will be offered by:

        • 15U Girls - 9pm Dec 4th

        • 16U,17U/18U Girls -9pm Dec 11th

        • Some teams may get finalized sooner.

      • DV Team positions will be offered by:

        • 15U Girls - 9pm Dec 5th

        • 15U, 17U/18U Girls - 9pm Dec 12th

      • All other teams

        • Offers will be made by 9pm, 2 days after tryouts

      • All official offers are made by email from Admin.  Athletes will be provided a link to pay the commitment fee, as well as the deadline by which it has to be paid.  Any offers declined, or not paid by the deadline will open offers to other athletes at coach(es) and admin’s discretion

        • Athletes may be offered a position verbally, but until the official offer is made and commitment fee paid, it is not finalized

  • Developmental (DV) Team Program

    • The Developmental Team Program is focused on developing a sound foundation for athletes who enjoy the sport of volleyball and would like to participate outside of the school season.  Athletes who have not yet reached their athletic potential “aka late bloomers” will often jump from the DV program one year into the HP another. The long term goal of the Developmental program is to develop athletes in the long term who will continue to play in Adult Leagues under the Sport For Life model.  The DV Program is about Development, Participation and Enjoyment of the sport.

    • Athletes who choose another sport as their primary (i.e. soccer, basketball, Dance etc...) or who are unsure if they wish to pursue volleyball at an High-Performance level  may find the commitment expectations of the DV Program more suitable.

    • Athletes are still expected to work hard! It is NOT a “social event” program

    • 10-12 Athletes will be selected per team, with the preference being (numbers allowed) for 12

    • Program includes:

    • Two 90 minute practices per week. (Some may be two hours)

      •  January through April

      • Sundays + 1 of Mon,Tues, Wed or Thur evening (may vary during the season)

      • Tournaments count as “a practice” for # of practice/week

      • Limited facilities available during spring break.  Priority goes to HP and Older teams, and teams with a tournament on the trailing weekend of spring break

      • Athletes are expected to attend at least 1 practice each week

        • **Absences can still affect playing time!!

    • Potential Clinics/Open Gym at various times throughout year. (may require additional nominal fee for clinics)

    • Coach Travel fees are not included in program fee but an estimate will be presented prior to tryouts

      • ALL ROSTER ATHLETES pay a share of the coach fees regardless of their tournament attendance

    • Personal Travel costs are not included

    • OKVA League (3-4x) (12U-16U only)

    • Super Spike (1x Okanagan)

    • Regionals (12U, 13U & 14U only)

      • Athletes are expected to attend

    • Provincials

      • Athlete MUST attend

        • If you know you will have a conflict with Provincials and won’t be attending then the Train & Play program is probably a better choice for you!!

    • KVA Battle of the Borders (15U/16U only)

    • Some DV Teams may decide to attend Nationals in (varies by age group).  These fees costs are extra, and only team members attending Nationals will be required to cover costs.

  • KVA PACK High Performance (HP) Team Program

    • The High Performance Team program is focused on developing high-end competitive athletes.  It is primarily intended for athletes who have chosen volleyball to be their primary sport and wish to compete in the sport at a High Performance level, tryout for TeamBC Programs and potentially play at the Post-Secondary level

    • The focus of the HP Teams is Long Term Development of High Performance Athletes through hard work, effort, passion and dedication.

    • 10-12 Athletes will be selected per team

      • There may be “practice players”/red shirts allowed to participate with the teams in practices at each coach’s discretion (cost may be extra)

    • Program includes:

      • 3 practices per week. January through April

        • Sunday + 2 of Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday or Thursday evening (may vary throughout season)

        • Tournaments count as “a practice” for # of practice/week

        • Limited facilities available during spring break.  Priority goes to HP and Older teams, and teams with a tournament on the trailing weekend of spring break

        • HP Athletes are expected to have a high level of commitment for practices and tournaments!

          • We understand that life happens and individual exceptions can be made and must be discussed with your coach ahead of time! But please be aware if you know you are going to have to miss a lot due to other commitments ((i.e. Family events, holiday travel, other sports/activities, etc…)  the HP program might not be for you.

          • Overall HP athletes are expected to be able to attend at least 75% of Practices and Strength Training throughout the season!

      • Strength training program

        •  1 hour/week group session with certified trainers for 10 weeks (included in program cost)

    • Tournaments

        • 17U/18U - 2 Super Series, Jr Heat Invitational, Provincials and Nationals.

      • Leadership Roles: The HP teams may be doing joint practices/clinics with the DV or younger teams.  The HP athletes are expected to work with and be leader/mentor role models during these joint sessions and also at games/off the court.

High Performance Program Expectations

Athletes

  • Volleyball is the #1 priority in season. Season runs from Jan thru May

    • KVA Supports the multi-sport athlete.  Each coach will do their best to support multi-sport athletes and will try to work this out with each athlete.  It is expected that your other sport/activity provides the same consideration. For example: You miss 1 volleyball practice this week for (soccer/basketball/dance/piano etc…) you miss that other event to attend volleyball instead the next weekend etc…

    • However, each athlete and their parent(s) must be honest about how much the athlete can do, keeping in mind proper rest, recovery and their educational/social needs.

    •   General rule of thumb:  If you can’t make at least 75% of practices and the mandatory tournaments over the season, the HP program might not be for you.

  • Winning isn’t the prime goal.  But you must learn to hate losing more than you hate:

    • Hard Work

    • Sweat

    • Early Mornings

    • Curfews

    • Choosing a healthy lifestyle

    • Learning new skills/ways of doing things

    • etc..

  • If you are more interested in the status of being on an HP team then putting in the hard work, time and effort required, then the HP team might not be for you

  • If you are “NOT GOING TO PLAY” if you don’t make the HP Team...the HP team might not be for you.

  • If Playing Time is one of your top priorities...the HP team might not be for you

  • If playing with your friends is one of your top priorities...the HP team might not be for you

  • If you think volleyball is primarily a social event, the HP team might not be for you

  • If you are not prepared to represent the club and your TEAM in the best possible manner at all times, on and off the court, the HP team might not be for you.

  • If your family is planning a lot of travel time (holidays, skiing etc…) that will interfere with your ability to meet the commitment expectations.  The HP team might not be for you.

  • If your ego/pride feels that it is more important to look good and be the star player then be a good team player...the HP team might not be for you

  • If you are unwilling to play any position/role that a coach may assign whether in game or practice...the HP team might not be for you.

  • Being on an HP team is not about YOU! It is about the TEAM

  • Being on the HP team is a PRIVILEGE not a RIGHT.

  • There is an expectation to hold yourself and your teammates accountable and to a high level of standards, both on and off the court.

  • Keep in mind, just because you are selected for HP one year does not mean you will be the next!! And Vice-Versa!  You have to work hard to earn your spot each year.

  • KVA reserves the right to remove a player from any team if certain expectations are not met (see bottom)

Parents

  • HP Team Selections are not a topic of debate/discussion.

    • Parents cannot ask “why did their child not make it…”, “why did child ***** make it” etc…

    • Parents CAN however ask “What can my child do to improve his/her chances of making it next year”.  Though we would rather see the athletes asking that question...

  • Playing time on HP teams is not a topic of discussion from parents.  If athletes have a question about playing time they can discuss it with the coach, and if they feel they need another adult present, a youth committee member can participate in the discussions.

    • The discussions should also be more along the lines of

      • “Coach, what can I do to earn more court time, next tournament”

      • NOT

      • “Coach, why didn’t I get more court time this weekend”

“Losers assemble in small groups and complain about the coaches and other players. Winners assemble as a TEAM and find ways to win”

  • If parents feel that they cannot take themselves out of the equation with regard to their child athlete...the HP team might not be for their child.

Athletes moving between teams.

  • KVA has the right to remove a player from any team for any reason KVA deems to be detrimental to the club, team, players, coaches and/or officials. Including (but not limited to)

    • High number of unexcused absences (missed practices/tournaments)

    • Poor attitude

    • Lack of work ethic/effort

    • Lack of respect/poor sportsmanship shown to coaches, teammates, other teams, officials etc.. (on part of either the athlete OR parents/guardians)

    • Drug or Alcohol use during ANY KVA or VBC Event.

      • This means at the hotel, while traveling etc!

      • This includes but not limited to Cigarettes/Tobacco, E-Cigarettes/Vaporizers, Marijuana etc.

      • If you are in doubt, don’t do it.

    • Showing up at a practice/event under the influence of drugs/alcohol.  Especially if said substance can cause a safety risk

    • Violation of our social media policy

      • Bullying, inappropriate posts, causing drama etc...

  • In the event of considering removing or moving an athlete down, a meeting will be held by the coach and at least 2 members of the youth committee with the athlete and parents to issue a warning first to give the athlete a chance to resolve any issues first.

    • Exception: Drugs/Alcohol use by athletes on KVA Events is a ZERO-TOLERANCE issue.  JUST DON’T

  • It is the jurisdiction of the YOUTH COMMITTEE to make this decision. Not the coach.

  • Athletes may also be moved between developmental teams at the discretion of the Youth Committee, to balance teams #’s wise.  (i.e we do not want to end up with teams of only 7 or 8 players!!!)

  • In the event of a spot opening up on a HP team (due to injury, illness etc..) the YOUTH COMMITTEE has the option to look at the DV Teams for a suitable candidate to maintain viability on the HP team.

  •
